Hey Travel Lover
If you had to spend one day in Venice, what would be the first activity you would engage in? Do I hear gondola ride? Yipeeeeee!!!
For some reason, too long to bore you with at the moment, I had only a day in Venice and had to leave with a flight at midnight…Almost a Cinderella story right?
What to do, What to do, I woke up bright and early but apparently I forgot to read the daylight savings notice on my nightstand the previous night (this means setting the clock an hour ahead of the standard time) as I got in quite late. My initial plan was to set out at 8am, when I got downstairs and realized I had lost an hour, I had to skip brekkie and put on my tourist hat – not literally and head out
My first point of call was St. Mark’s Square and Saint Mark’s Basilica, they are in the same place actually. I used a water taxi to get here. I believe tourists want to tick this as fast as possible, it was a beehive of people and activities. The Basilica was undergoing renovation during my visit so I didn’t go in.
Next was my gondola ride, we were six passengers in the gondola with the gondolier (gondola driver). It was an interesting experience, going between houses, under the bridge and out in the Grand Canal. I enjoyed the ride and was glad to have it ticked off my bucket list.
Then I went on a walking tour, which was both informative and educative, I totally recommend it. I got to see and hear lots about Venice, the people and the culture. I noticed during the walk the window boxes in most Venetian apartments, the beautiful burst of colors from the flowers in the window boxes was a dream! We ended the tour with a glorious view of Rialto Bridge, the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice and also a major tourist attraction.
I had the intention of visiting the Murano Glass Factory, but alas, I had run out of time. I kept that in my “to do” for my next visit and headed to my hotel. Somewhere during the day, I sneaked in shopping and a snack.
Just before going to the airport, I grabbed a Spritz cocktail to toast an amazing day. Lovely, refreshing orange colored cocktail that originated in Venice.
So Travel Lover, is Venice a place you want to see? Is a gondola ride on your bucket list? Would you have a Spritz in Venice?
Till Next Week
Truly Yours
