Hey Travel Lover
“If you throw one coin: you will return to Rome. If you throw two coins: you will fall in love with an attractive Italian. If you throw three coins: you will marry the person that you met…”😍😁🤭 This is a popular myth about the Trevi Fountain that originated in 1954 with the movie "Three Coins in the Fountain”. Trevi Fountain literally means Three Street Fountain because it is built at the junction of three streets.
I visited Rome for the first time in 2015. I was to travel with a friend but as these things go, she couldn’t make it so It became a solo trip. I remember trying hard to locate the Trevi Fountain and It proved such an Herculean task, as I got lost so many times. Being the happy and determined tourist that I am, I eventually found it and threw in a coin. If you read the myth, you will understand why I did that.
Among the teeming crowd of people, I got a fellow tourist to assist with capturing my “coin-tossing” moment and my “in-front-of-the-fountain” moment. That’s what we solo traveler’s do and you know how those shots can either be a hit or miss🤭. It’s just what it is. Anyways, fast forward to 2023, the universe suddenly remembered I tossed in one coin eight years ago and BOOM💥 I’m back in Rome.
Enter Rome trip #2😁. On this occasion, I wasn’t a solo traveller; I went with my mom. Fun Fact: My mom has “children” everywhere, and Rome in all her glory was not an exception. Her reach still surprises me but hey, I’m a proud daughter. Upon our arrival, my newly “discovered” brother, resident in Rome, became our tour guide. I tell you, there’s nothing like someone who knows the way, showing you the way.
On our first day in Rome, I mentioned that a visit to the Trevi Fountain is a must-do. Maybe it was my previous “one coin toss” at work, maybe it was the universe or maybe it was just a strong conviction to try other parts of the myth😆, who knows. The crowd as usual was overwhelming, but my brother knew just what to do and where to go, and follow his lead we did. This time we arrived at the Trevi Fountain with no wrong turns and no time wasting. Of course let me chip in that he speaks Italian perfectly…*whispering* no language barrier😁
This time, I had a beautiful slo-mo video of my coin tossing (you can watch this on ajalaress instagram account) and gorgeous pictures of my mom, the Fountain and I. I won’t reveal how many coins I tossed in the Fountain😉 but you can hazard a guess in the comments section. If you ask me, I’d say this second trip was well worth it, and you can see from the glee on my face.
As you can tell by now, the Trevi Fountain is not just a popular tourist attraction in Rome. It is one I totally recommend visiting as the masterful work of art makes it so beautiful to behold. If I’m in Rome a third time, you bet I would still visit this fountain.
So Travel Lover, do you believe in myths? Would you visit the Trevi Fountain when in Rome? How many coins will you toss in the Trevi Fountain? Let us know your responses in the comments section.
